- The result is a fully developed woman with the emotions of a baby, seeking freedom in a world where men dictate women’s lives.
- Stone, looking impressed in her acceptance speech, shared her conversation with Lanthimos, which was consistently supportive.
“Last night, I was freaking out, as you can see a lot is going on, that maybe something like this could happen,” she said, “and Yorgos said to me, ‘Please get yourself out of this. It’s not about me, so he was right. It’s about a team that has come together with the sum of all its parts to make something big.’
This is Stone’s second win for Best Actress; she previously won for her hardworking Hollywood starlet turn in the 2016 musical “La La Land.”
In the imaginative, absurd world of “Pure Things,” Stone’s Bela Baxter intends to be free to be as crude and experimental as she pleases. In a memorable scene at a restaurant in Portugal, Baxter starts a wild and foolish dance, inspiring her lover (played by Mark Ruffalo) to join in with her enthusiasm.
Stone, 35, said in an interview with The Times in November, “She’s drinking in the world around her in such unique and beautiful ways that I can just dream.”
